Sam Van Kleeck is a 21-year-old resident of Stone Ridge, New York. He is a 2015 graduate of SUNY Ulster where he was selected for the 2015 Best of Year SUNY Student Art Exhibition at the NY State Museum in Albany. In the fall he will be attending SUNY New Paltz. As a student at SUNY Ulster he explored other interest in music and science but was continually drawn to the visual arts. His diverse interest can be seen in his artwork. His artistic styles lend themselves to different mediums with equal success. From his pen drawings that derive from a lifetime of doodling in school that demonstrate a strong personal expression, to landscapes that capture the beauty and inspiration of the Hudson Valley. His artistic styles lend themselves to different mediums with equal success. In warmer weather you can often find Sam in High Falls or up on the Shawangunks.

PAINTINGS BY Sam VanKleeck
My paintings begin forming in my mind as I am pulled into a moment of time. I am drawn to the quick changing light and colors of an evening sky as can be seen in my landscapes. Capturing and sharing a mood or emotion, differently than a photograph would, motivates me and pushes my art. My medium of choice is paint, whether it’s watercolors, acrylic, or oils. I enjoy experimenting with a variety of additives to achieve different effects. I have recently begun working on watercolor washed paper to create the feeling of layers through color and ink. These pieces are then coated in an epoxy polymer resin, which I believe amplifies the color as well as creating a glass-like surface. This style has developed and transformed from years of doodling. I enjoy the process of taking what starts as a very fluid looking watercolor painting and then imposing this more solid and rigid structure of layers.
